Kitchen Remodel and Great Room - Willow Glen, San Jose

Before

This project began as a 1950's home in the Willow Glen area of San Jose. Bauman Builders was brought in to convert four existing rooms, consisting of a kitchen, dining room, living room and family room, into a kitchen and great room. In addition to opening up the rooms, the owners wanted to open up a section of the ceiling to gain height and to allow for additional illumination with skylights.

One of the challenges of this project was to accommodate the skylights within the constraints of the existing truss roof system. We decided that an attractive solution would be to enhance the truss by wrapping the framing to create the illusion of larger beams within the skylight well. The wrapped beams were then painted to complete the effect.

After

In the end, the entire room was leveled, both floor and ceiling, and the majority of the structure was replaced. Custom cabinets were installed and topped with granite countertops. The island features its own sink with disposal, making it easy to clean up after eating at the integrated breakfast bar.
