When our rental property in Santa Cruz County burned down three years ago, we began making plans to rebuild. Anyone who has gone through such a process can tell you horror stories about the paperwork and red tape. Our lot was a difficult lot to build on, and the whole thing was a challenge beyond my capabilities. I’ve got a doctorate in biblical studies, but don’t ask me anything about structural engineering or building permits! We drew up some plans and worked at first with a different contractor. When it was clear he couldn’t really handle a project of this complexity, we went to Bauman Builders. We have been very pleased.
Marc Bauman is a first-rate contractor with a sharp mind for practical solutions to challenging problems. His partner Jason is a whiz at navigating the paperwork and permitting processes. They were actually able to save us a great deal of money over against the first contractor’s work, and the project has gone forward splendidly. The Bauman Builders guys are always friendly and available. They listen, and they take pride in their work. Highly recommended.

They managed the renovation of our backyard. Marc and Jason were both excellent people to work with – organized, communicative, detail-oriented, and friendly. Marc was always open to our questions (no matter how simple), and he always let us know what to expect. If things didn’t go according to plan, he was quick to inform us.
Organized: Gave us a calendar at the beginning of the project, which spanned about 4 weeks, informing us of what would happen when – e.g. demolition, tree removal, hardscape installation, etc. Don’t know if this is standard for most contractors, but it was really helpful.
Communicative: Gave us updates about the pieces of our project every week. In addition, we could always contact him by email or phone at any time of the day.
Detail-oriented: At one point, he made the people who had built a stone wall return to fix it because of some imperfections he was not happy with. This involved recutting certain pieces of stone.
Friendly: During construction, our water heater broke, just coincidentally. Jason offered to take time out of his day to look at it, talk with us about possible next steps, and even contact his plumber for an estimate. Above and beyond!
I appreciated their professionalism, and I wouldn’t hesitate to hire them in the future.
